The Typical Size of Bowie Knives

As a testament to the brilliance of the design, knives of all sizes oftentimes include the characteristics of a Bowie knife in their blade design. However, not all knives are Bowie knives, even if they have a characteristically clipped blade and fighting-style hand guard. Knives of all shapes and sizes come with some of the very distinctive elements that make larger knives into true Bowie knives, but not all of them.

When serious collectors talk about Bowie knives, anything of 6 inches or over is fair game. Anything shorter than this typically represents a hunting knife, which has incorporated elements of classic Bowie design and manufacture into the blade. The clipped point, for instance, is extremely useful for those needing to clean animals. The Bowie knife also has a famously safe design, given the wide hand guard, and this is sometimes incorporated in the design of other knives.

There are Bowie knives of between six and 10 inches in length, which make excellent hunting tools. A Bowie knife of this size has a blade large enough to handle tough tasks, such as dealing with bone, but precise enough to elegantly fillet meat. These are among the most useful and practical of knife designs. This size range is also the one in which one is likely to find the highest quality metals and the best standards of manufacture for these knives.

Those who enjoy knives which are more novelty than practical tools will likely get a kick out of the Bowie knives which exceed 14 inches in length. It must be said that these knives have very little practical value. While they are large and heavy enough to cut brush, or even wood, they are also more expensive than blades purpose-built for those tasks. They do, however, look very striking hanging on a wall and are oftentimes heavily ornamented.

There are extremely large Bowie knives available on the market. A Bowie knife of over 14 inches in length stretches the limits of practicality. They can be suitable for extremely rugged tasks, such as clearing brush or chopping wood, but one is better off using a machete or a hatchet for such endeavors. They do, however, make very striking displays, something for which there frequently used.
